When it comes to your oral health, the health of your gums is just as vital as the strength and health of your teeth. Your gums support your teeth, helping them stay strong and stable, and contribute to your overall health. If you develop gum disease, studies have shown that you may increase your risk of heart disease, diabetes, and dementia.
These links to serious health problems make healthy gums extremely important. However, people often don’t take their gum health seriously. At Parker Family Dentistry, we want to change that. Our dentists, Dr. Travis Parker and Dr. Esi Parker, focus on patient education in our Logansport practice, encouraging every patient to take excellent care of their gums.
We also offer various periodontal treatments to help restore your periodontal health if you’ve already developed gum disease or another issue.
How Common Are Gum Problems?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost half of adults over 30 years of age have some form of gum disease. And gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss among adults, so it is an issue that we must take seriously.
In addition, patients may have other gum problems that require treatment. No issues with your teeth or gums should be ignored.
How to Keep Your Gums Healthy
To prevent periodontal disease and maintain excellent oral health, it’s imperative that you brush your teeth at least twice per day, usually in the morning and before bedtime, and floss your teeth at least once a day.
Routine dental cleanings at Parker Family Dentistry are also necessary to keep your teeth and gums as healthy as possible. Our friendly dental hygienist can remove plaque and tartar from your teeth and gum line that you weren’t able to remove at home.
If you’re showing signs of gum disease, such as bleeding, discomfort, swelling in your gum area, reach out to us to schedule an exam. With early intervention, we can better help you manage periodontal disease to avoid experiencing its harmful effect.
Periodontal Treatments in Logansport
We always encourage preventive care first, and if a patient develops a gum infection, we recommend periodontal treatment options based on their specific dental needs.
If you already have gum disease or other gum problems, we urge you to call us. We will thoroughly examine your situation and work with you to develop a customized treatment plan.
Our periodontal treatments include:
Soft Tissue Grafting
Often used to stop gum recession or improve the appearance of the gums, soft tissue grafting is a common procedure, which our experienced dentists perform skillfully.
Scaling and Root Planing
This procedure is basically a deep cleaning above and below your gumline. It is a non-surgical method for treating gum disease in which the dentist removes any bacteria, plaque, and tartar that has developed in the pockets of your gums.
Gum Disease Laser Therapy
Laser therapy is an excellent alternative to surgery in more advanced cases of gum disease. With laser therapy, your dentist can quickly and efficiently remove inflamed and infected gum tissue. Dentists undergo training before offering laser therapy, so you’re ensured a safe and effective treatment.
A frenum is a binding strip of tissue that attaches your tongue to the bottom of your mouth. There are also two frenums at the front of your mouth. These are between your gums and lips, one on the bottom and one on the top of your mouth. The length and size of the tissue varies depending on the person.
If you have complications with a frenum, we can perform a frenectomy to remove the small piece of tissue, relieving you from any discomfort or restriction.
We may recommend crown lengthening if we need to place a dental crown on a tooth, but we don’t have enough healthy or strong tooth material to attach the crown to. With crown lengthening, we can reshape the tooth and contour the gums to get a snug, stable fit for the crown.
