Children's Dentistry

We love welcoming children of all ages into our family-friendly dental practice! Our kind and empathetic dental team enjoy helping little ones achieve and maintain excellent oral health and hygiene as they grow.

At What Age Should My Children See the Dentist?

At Parker Family Dentistry, we encourage parents to start bringing their children in for dental appointments as soon as their teeth begin sprouting, usually at around six months old.

With early dental care, we can help young children establish a good relationship with the dentist at a young age, which can benefit them throughout their lives. Early visits also give our skilled dentists, Drs. Travis and Esi Parker, a chance to make sure your child’s teeth are coming in correctly. If there are issues with erupting teeth, we can address those problems promptly, so your child enjoys a beautiful smile and the best oral health possible as they mature.

During your child’s dental appointments, we can also teach your child how to brush and floss properly, and we’ll discuss your child’s oral hygiene routine with you. Our dentists are big proponents of patient education because we understand how vital your at-home care is to maintain a fantastic, healthy smile.

Great oral health requires an excellent oral hygiene routine at home combined with routine dental visits for cleanings and exams. If we can instill both those habits early, your child will have the tools they need to enjoy a lifetime of good dental health.

What Other Treatments Do You Provide for Children?

In addition to dental cleanings and exams, we often recommend dental sealants for children once their permanent molars emerge. A dental sealant is a thin, medical-grade acrylic coating that we apply to the permanent molars, which are particularly prone to decay. The dental sealant acts as a barrier, protecting the molar’s deep grooves against food particles, bacteria, and plaque.

We also use fluoride treatments as a protective measure for some children. Fluoride strengthens the tooth’s enamel, making the tooth less susceptible to cavities. Our professional team members can apply fluoride or a dental sealant quickly–usually in a matter of minutes–and with no pain to your child.

Pulpotomies in Logansport

As an understanding and family-oriented team, we know how hard it is to see your child hurting, and we never want parents to experience that. However, when your child has tooth pain, we are glad to be here to help.

A pulpotomy is a procedure we perform for children who have severe cavities that we can’t treat with a filling alone. A pulpotomy becomes necessary when a cavity advances into the tooth root, causing an infection. The procedure is similar to a root canal, but it’s less invasive.

We remove the top portion of the infected tooth root with a pulpotomy instead of the entire root, leaving the healthy tissue behind. Once we have performed the pulpotomy, your child should experience relief from the cavity-related pain, and they’ll enjoy better overall oral health.

To make dental treatments as comfortable as possible, we offer laughing gas (nitrous oxide) when necessary. If your child is anxious about their treatment, please let us know so we can discuss this option with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

We offer compassionate and friendly family dentistry for infants, toddlers, adolescents, teens, and adults. Don't worry! Parker Family Dentistry has you covered, no matter your age!

When Can I Bring My Child to Your Dental Office?

In most cases, we begin seeing children as soon as their first tooth begins to show. At that point, we will examine your child's oral health and make sure their baby teeth are erupting properly. If we notice any developing problems, we can intervene early, which generally offers patients better outcomes and a simpler, more straightforward treatment.

When you begin bringing your children to our Logansport dental office at a young age, we also have the opportunity to develop a long-term relationship with them. And a good relationship with the dentist early on can benefit your children for the rest of their lives.

Teaching Good Oral Hygiene

We love teaching the young patients who visit our office how to take excellent care of their teeth and gums, and we try to make every visit fun and exciting for them. We encourage routine dental cleaning and check-ups for children, just as we do with adults, and we may recommend dental sealants or fluoride treatments to protect their teeth from decay as they age.
