Root Canal Treatment

A severe toothache that continues to worsen is often a sign of an infected or abscessed tooth. Some reasons an infection can develop are advanced decay, trauma, or a crack that allows bacteria to travel deep into the tooth’s pulp area.

When We Recommend Root Canal Treatment

A root canal procedure involves removing the infected pulp to relieve pain and save the tooth from extraction. Some signs we look for are:

  • Severe, persistent toothache
  • Swollen or tender gums near the affected tooth
  • Extreme sensitivity to hot and cold
  • Sharp pain when touching or chewing on the tooth
  • Tooth discoloration
  • A white bump or “pimple” on the gums
  • A foul odor or taste in the mouth

If you recognize any of these symptoms, we urge you to call us at (574) 753-4542 for an emergency appointment. The pain won’t go away on its own, your risk for tooth loss increases, and infection can spread to other parts of your body and become life-threatening.

Types of Root Canal Treatment We Offer

We customize our approach for each root canal we perform, depending on the tooth we’re treating.

Simple and Complex

Most root canals involve a single tooth with one or two canals, which we can typically complete in one appointment. More complex cases, such as teeth with unusual anatomy, may require additional time and precision, but our dentists are experienced in handling both.

Molar Root Canals

Molars have three or four narrow, curved canals that can be a challenge to access. Molar root canals require a higher level of skill and experience. Our dentists are well-practiced in molar root canal therapy and handle these cases routinely in our Logansport office.

Retreatment

Sometimes, a root-canaled tooth becomes reinfected or doesn't heal properly. Retreatment involves reopening the tooth, removing the previous filling material, thoroughly cleaning the canals, and resealing the tooth, giving the tooth a second chance.

What to Expect During a Root Canal

With advanced rotary endodontics, we can perform root canal procedures faster and with more accuracy and effectiveness than ever before. Our dentists perform the following steps:

  • Thoroughly numb the tooth so you don't feel any pain. Nitrous oxide is also available for your comfort.
  • Access the inside of the tooth through a small hole
  • Use advanced technology to remove the inflamed or infected pulp
  • Thoroughly clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth
  • Place a material called gutta-percha in the hollows to prevent reinfection.
  • Place a temporary filling on the tooth to protect it as it heals

In about two weeks, you will return to our Logansport office so we can place a final filling or create your same-visit CEREC® crown.

Are Root Canals Painful?

The idea that root canal treatments, also known as endodontic therapy, are painful is largely a myth. The excruciating pain experienced leading up to treatment is caused by the infection. The fact is that when your dentist numbs the tooth, the pain disappears. Once they remove the infected pulp, you will feel some soreness in the area, but the intense pain will be gone.
